What is Direct Vent and why is it better than Power Vent?

Modern sealed dual-chamber (DIRECT VENT) forced air intake and exhaust pipe (flue). The exterior of the sealed double chamber stainless steel "flue" pipe system is for the arrival of intake or combustion air.

The interior chamber is the forced air exhaust. With this advanced feature, the exterior surfaces of the flue are cooled by the incoming combustion airflow. In addition to a much cooler flue pipe exterior, the intake air is taken from outside the home.

This method eliminates the potential for back draft of your furnace or gas dryer, as well as preventing escape of furnace supplied heating or air conditioning which can be drawn out of the home by tankless heaters which use "POWER VENT" designs.

Q: Why do the "experts" all say that a direct-vent model is best? Is this really that important?

A: Yes, the experts are correct and the reasons are based on pretty solid science. A direct-vent (also known as balanced or dual chamber) model takes it's intake air from outside the home. Basically, with this method the internal atmosphere of the home is not disturbed in any way and the tankless heater does not need an inside-the-home air supply. With this method there is no need for the complicated room air supply and cubic feet of space calculations. This alone simplifies a tankless heater installation.

Q: Should I buy a GAS OR ELECTRIC tankless heater?

A:Typically, electric models are used only for a single sink or a half bath installation, or for use in a workshop or small cabin. Some electric units require 60 to 150 amps of 220V electricity on a stand-alone circuit breaker. In comparision, A Toyota Prius Hybrid car uses 201 Volts and 80 amps to propel itself at highway speed. Many older small town rural homes still operate on a 60 amp capacity service. Large whole house electric models may consume more electricity than the combined demands of the whole dwelling. For these reasons, gas models are preferred for most installations as they are almost always more economical to operate.
